Indications
- Reduces blood sugar levels
- Used in type 2 diabetes Mellitus in adults
- Used when diet, exercise, and weight loss do not sufficiently control blood sugar levels
Pharmacology
- Stimulates insulin release from pancreatic cells
- Facilitates Ca+2 transport across beta-cell membranes
- Decreases hepatic glucose output
Dosage & Administration
- Usual initial dose: 40 to 80 mg daily
- Maximum dose: 320 mg daily in divided doses
- Dose determined by blood and urine sugar levels
- Recommended daily dose: one to four tablets (maximum 120 mg) in a single intake at breakfast time
- Modification in dosage based on response to treatment or changes in external factors
Interaction
- Strengthened effect with other blood sugar lowering medicines
- Weakened effect with medicines for central nervous system disorders, inflammation, asthma, breast disorders, or endometriosis
- Possible interaction with medicines reducing blood clotting (warfarin)
- Not recommended to consume alcohol
- Potential effects on concentration and reaction time if blood sugar levels are imbalanced

- Allergy to gliclazide or related medicines
- Insulin-dependent diabetes (type 1)
