Indications
- Reduces blood sugar levels
- Used in type 2 diabetes mellitus in adults
Pharmacology
- Stimulates insulin release from pancreatic cells
- Decreases hepatic glucose output
Dosage & Administration
- Usual initial dose: 40 to 80 mg daily
- Maximum dose: 320 mg daily
- Should be taken before meal
- Modified release preparation recommended daily dose: 1 to 4 tablets (maximum 120 mg)
Interaction
- Potential interactions with other oral antidiabetics, antibiotics, medicines for high blood pressure, fungal infections, ulcers, depression, painkillers, alcohol, and more
- May increase effects of warfarin
Contraindications
- Allergic to sulfonylurea or related medicines
- Insulin-dependent diabetes (type 1)
