Indications

• Treatment of parkinsonism
• Treatment of drug-induced extrapyramidal reactions
• Prophylaxis and treatment of signs and symptoms of infection caused by various strains of influenza A virus

Pharmacology

• Mechanism of antiviral activity not clearly understood
• Prevents release of infectious viral nucleic acid into host cell
• Interferes with function of viral M2 protein
• Inhibits replication of influenza A virus isolates from different subtypes

Dosage & Administration

• Dosage for Parkinson's disease in adults and elderly
• Dosage for prophylaxis of influenza A in adults and children
• Dosage for influenza A in adults and elderly
• Dosage for herpes zoster in immunocompromised patients

Interaction

• Concurrent administration with anticholinergic agents or levodopa
• Concurrent administration with drugs or substances acting on the CNS

Contraindications

• Known hypersensitivity to active substances or excipients

Side Effects

• Mild adverse effects that may diminish over time
• Commonly reported side effects such as nausea, dizziness, and insomnia
• Other possible side effects including edema, anxiety, hallucinations, ataxia, blurred vision, and dry mouth

Pregnancy & Lactation

• Pregnancy category C
• Use during pregnancy when benefits outweigh potential risks
• Excretion into breast milk in low concentrations

Precautions & Warnings

• Avoid abrupt discontinuation in Parkinson's disease patients
• Reduce dose if atropine-like effects appear
• Abrupt discontinuation may precipitate delirium, agitation, and other reactions

Use in Special Populations

• Dosing adjustments in patients with renal impairment
• Use with caution in patients with hepatic impairment
