Description
- Adglim is indicated as an adjunct to diet and exercise to lower the blood glucose in patients with noninsulin dependent (Type II) diabetes mellitus (NIDDM)
- Glimepiride is a sulfonylurea antidiabetic agent which decreases blood glucose concentration
- In principle, the dosage of Glimepiride is governed by the desired blood sugar level
- Glimepiride tablet must be swallowed with sufficient amount of liquid
- Hypoglycaemia, temporary visual impairment, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, urticaria, fall in blood pressure
Indications
- Adjunct to diet and exercise
- Lower blood glucose in Type II diabetes mellitus
- Used concomitantly with metformin
- Use in combination with insulin to lower blood glucose
Pharmacology
- Stimulates insulin release from pancreatic beta cells
- Improves sensitivity of beta cells to glucose stimulus
- Reduces basal hepatic glucose production
- Increases peripheral tissue sensitivity to insulin
Dosage
- Initial dose of 1 mg once daily
- Gradual dose titration based on regular blood sugar monitoring
- Usual dose range is 1 to 4 mg daily
- Timing and distribution of doses decided by physician
Administration
- Tablets must be swallowed with sufficient liquid
Interaction
- Potential interactions with ACE inhibitors, aminosalicylic acid, anabolic steroids, azapropazone, coumarin derivatives
- Other drugs may attenuate the hypoglycaemic action of Adglim
Contraindications
- Not suitable for insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus
- Not for the treatment of diabetic ketoacidosis or diabetic coma
- Hypersensitivity to Glimepiride or other sulfonylureas

Pregnancy & Lactation
- Not to be taken during pregnancy

- Initial weeks may increase risk of hypoglycaemia
- Careful monitoring required
- Promptly controlled by immediate intake of carbohydrates
Overdose Effects
- Hypoglycaemia
- Treatment with oral glucose
- Severe cases constitute medical emergencies
