Primary Function
Lowers blood glucose levels in noninsulin dependent (Type II) diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) patients
Indications
- Adjunct to diet and exercise for NIDDM patients
- May be used concomitantly with metformin
- Combination with insulin for inadequate glycaemic control by diet and exercise
Mechanism of Action
Stimulates release of insulin from pancreatic beta cells, improves sensitivity to glucose stimulus, reduces hepatic glucose production, increases peripheral tissue sensitivity to insulin
Dosage Range
1mg-6mg once daily, based on blood sugar monitoring
Administration
Swallow whole with sufficient liquid

- Potentiates Hypoglycaemic Action:
- ACE inhibitors
- Anabolic steroids
- Chloramphenicol
- Fluoxetine
- Attenuates Hypoglycaemic Action:

Contraindications
- Insulin dependent (Type I) diabetes mellitus
- Diabetic ketoacidosis
- Hypersensitivity to Glimepiride
- Severe hepatic or renal dysfunction

Pregnancy & Lactation
- Not to be taken during pregnancy, changeover to insulin required
- Must not be taken by breastfeeding women
Precautions & Warnings
- Increased risk of hypoglycaemia in initial weeks of treatment
- Prompt control with immediate intake of carbohydrates

- Hypoglycaemia
- Severe hypoglycaemic reactions with coma or seizure
