Description
- Adjunct to diet and exercise for lowering blood glucose
- Indicated for noninsulin dependent (Type II) diabetes mellitus (NIDDM)
- May be used concomitantly with metformin
- Indicated for use in combination with insulin
- Stimulates the release of insulin from pancreatic beta cells
- Decreases blood glucose concentration
- Reduces basal hepatic glucose production
- Increases peripheral tissue sensitivity to insulin and glucose uptake
- Hypoglycaemic action persists for 24 hours

Mode of Action

- Potential for masking symptoms of hypoglycaemic attack with certain drugs (e.g., beta-receptor blockers, clonidine)
Contraindications
- Not suitable for insulin dependent (Type I) diabetes mellitus
- Not for use in diabetic ketoacidosis or diabetic coma
- Hypersensitivity to Glimepiride or sulfonylureas
- Severe hepatic dysfunction
- Severe impairment of renal function
- Not for dialysis patients

Precautions & Warnings

- Carbohydrates (glucose or sugar) to promptly control hypoglycaemia
- Careful monitoring required
Overdose Effects
- Hypoglycaemia in case of overdosage
- Mild symptoms treated with oral glucose and adjustments in drug dosage or meal patterns
- Severe reactions requiring immediate hospitalization
- Continuous monitoring for at least 24 to 48 hours
