Description
- Indicated as an adjunct to diet and exercise for noninsulin dependent (Type II) diabetes mellitus
- Can be used in combination with metformin or insulin when necessary
- Stimulates the release of insulin from pancreatic beta cells
- Reduces basal hepatic glucose production
- Increases peripheral tissue sensitivity to insulin
- Hypoglycaemic action lasts for 24 hours
- Dosage is determined by desired blood sugar level
- Initial dose is 1 mg once daily, gradually increase if needed
- Usual dose range for well-controlled diabetes is 1 to 4 mg daily
- Tablet must be swallowed with sufficient amount of liquid
- Interactions with various drugs including ACE inhibitors, antibiotics, and steroids
- Not suitable for insulin dependent diabetes or diabetic coma
- Potential side effects include hypoglycaemia, visual impairment, nausea, and abdominal pain
- Not to be taken during pregnancy or breastfeeding
- Initial weeks of treatment require careful monitoring for hypoglycaemia
- Overdosage can produce hypoglycaemia, requiring immediate medical attention
- Storage: Do not store above 30°C, keep away from light and out of reach of children
