Indications
- Adjunct to diet and exercise for lowering blood glucose in NIDDM patients
- Use in combination with insulin for lowering blood glucose
- Potential for hypoglycemia with combined use of Limerid and insulin
Pharmacology
- Sulfonylurea antidiabetic agent
- Stimulates insulin release from pancreatic beta cells
- Improves sensitivity of beta cells to glucose stimulus
Dosage
- Dose titration based on regular blood sugar monitoring
- Initial dose of 1 mg once daily
- Dose range of 1 to 4 mg daily for well-controlled diabetes
Administration
- Tablet must be swallowed with sufficient liquid
Interaction
- Drugs potentiating hypoglycemic action
- Drugs attenuating hypoglycemic action
- Concomitant treatment masking hypoglycemic attack symptoms
- Alcohol intake affecting Limerid activity
Contraindications
- Not suitable for insulin dependent diabetes mellitus
- Not for treatment of diabetic ketoacidosis or coma
- Not for patients hypersensitive to Glimepiride or sulfonamides
- Contraindicated in severe hepatic dysfunction and renal impairment

- Hypoglycaemia
- Temporary visual impairment
- Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain
- Urticaria
- Fall in blood pressure
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Not to be taken during pregnancy
- Changeover to insulin necessary during pregnancy
- Harmful when taken by breastfeeding women
Precautions & Warnings
- Increased risk of hypoglycaemia in initial weeks of treatment
- Necessitates careful monitoring
- Prompt control with immediate carbohydrate intake
Overdose Effects
- Hypoglycaemia from overdosage
- Mild symptoms treated with oral glucose and dosage adjustments
- Severe reactions require immediate hospitalization
