Indications
- Adjunct to diet and exercise to lower blood glucose in Type II diabetes mellitus
- Use in combination with insulin to lower blood glucose
- Potential for hypoglycaemia with combined use of Limerid and insulin
Pharmacology
- Sulfonylurea antidiabetic agent
- Stimulates insulin release from pancreatic beta cells
- Reduces basal hepatic glucose production
- Increases peripheral tissue sensitivity to insulin
- Hypoglycaemic action persists for 24 hours
Dosage
- Governed by desired blood sugar level
- Initial dose is 1 mg once daily
- Dose titration based on regular blood sugar monitoring
- Usual dose range in well controlled diabetes is 1 to 4 mg daily
- Timing and distribution of doses decided by physician
Administration
- Tablet must be swallowed with sufficient amount of liquid
Interaction
- Drugs which may potentiate the hypoglycaemic action of Limerid include ACE inhibitors, aminosalicylic acid, coumarin derivatives, MAO-inhibitors, sulfonamide antibiotics, tetracyclines
- Drugs which may attenuate the hypoglycaemic action of Limerid include barbiturates, corticosteroids, diazoxide, nicotinic acid, thyroid hormones
Contraindications
- Not suitable for insulin dependent diabetes mellitus
- Not for diabetic ketoacidosis or diabetic coma
- Not for patients hypersensitive to Glimepiride
- Not for patients with severe hepatic or renal dysfunction
- Not for dialysis patients

- Temporary visual impairment
- Nausea

- Abdominal pain
- Urticaria
- Fall in blood pressure
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Not to be taken during pregnancy
- Changeover to insulin necessary during pregnancy
- Harmful if taken while breastfeeding
- Changeover or discontinuation of breastfeeding is necessary
Precautions & Warnings
- Increased risk of hypoglycaemia in initial weeks of treatment
- Necessitates careful monitoring
- Prompt control of hypoglycaemia by intake of carbohydrates
Overdose Effects
- Can produce hypoglycaemia
- Mild symptoms treated with oral glucose and adjustments in drug dosage or meal patterns
- Severe reactions constitute medical emergencies requiring hospitalization
- Rapid intravenous injection of concentrated glucose solution for hypoglycaemic coma
