Description
- Limpet is indicated as an adjunct to diet and exercise to lower the blood glucose in patients with noninsulin dependent (Type II) diabetes mellitus (NIDDM)
- Glimepiride tablet must be swallowed with sufficient amount of liquid
- Glimepiride is a sulfonylurea antidiabetic agent which decreases blood glucose concentration.
- Patients planning a pregnancy must change over to insulin.
Indications
- Adjunct to diet and exercise for noninsulin dependent diabetes mellitus (Type II)
- May be used concomitantly with metformin for inadequate glycaemic control.
Mode of Action
- Stimulates the release of insulin from pancreatic beta cells
- Reduces basal hepatic glucose production
- Increases peripheral tissue sensitivity to insulin and glucose uptake
Dosage
- Initial dose is 1 mg once daily
- Usual dose range is 1 to 4 mg daily
- Timing and distribution of doses decided by the physician based on patient's life-style
Administration
- Tablet must be swallowed with sufficient amount of liquid.
Interaction
- Potentiates hypoglycaemic action:
- ACE inhibitors
- Anabolic steroids
- MAO-inhibitors
- Attenuates hypoglycaemic action:
- Barbiturates
- Corticosteroids
- Isoniazid
Contraindications
- Not suitable for insulin dependent diabetes mellitus
- Not for diabetic ketoacidosis or diabetic coma
- Not for patients hypersensitive to Glimepiride

- Temporary visual impairment
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Diarrhoea
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Not to be taken during pregnancy
- Must not be taken by breastfeeding women
Precautions & Warnings
- Initial weeks of treatment require careful monitoring for hypoglycaemia risk
Overdose Effects
- Overdosage can produce hypoglycaemia
- Mild hypoglycaemic symptoms without loss of consciousness should be treated with oral glucose and adjustments in drug dosage
