Description
- Diavir is indicated for lowering blood glucose in patients with noninsulin dependent (Type II) diabetes mellitus.
- It stimulates the release of insulin from pancreatic beta cells, improves sensitivity to glucose stimulus, and decreases hepatic glucose production.
Dosage
Initial dose is 1 mg once daily, can be increased gradually up to 6 mg based on blood sugar monitoring. Daily dose range is 1 to 4 mg. Dose timing and distribution to be decided by physician based on patient's lifestyle.
Administration
Tablet must be swallowed with sufficient liquid.

Contraindications
- Not Suitable for:
- Insulin dependent (Type I) diabetes mellitus
- Diabetic ketoacidosis
- Diabetic coma

Pregnancy & Lactation
- Not to be taken during pregnancy, changeover to insulin is necessary
- Must not be taken by breastfeeding women
Precautions & Warnings
Initial weeks of treatment have increased risk of hypoglycaemia, necessitates careful monitoring. Hypoglycaemia can be controlled by immediate intake of carbohydrates.
Overdose Effects
- Overdosage can produce hypoglycaemia
- Severe cases require immediate hospitalization
