Diactin 5 mg (Tablet)

Indications

• Control of hyperglycaemia
• Treatment of non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus
• Adjunct to diet
• Reduction of insulin dose
• Short term administration
• Transient control of blood glucose level

Pharmacology

• Stimulates insulin release from pancreas
• Increases insulin sensitivity
• Decreases hepatic glucose production

Dosage & Administration

• Approximately 30 minutes before a meal
• Initial dose of 5mg before breakfast
• Dosage adjustments based on blood glucose response
• Maximum recommended daily dose of 15mg
• Conservative dosing in elderly or debilitated patients
• Pediatric use not established

Interaction

• Potentiation by certain drugs
• Observation for hypoglycaemia
• Production of hyperglycaemia
• Observation for loss of control on blood glucose

Contraindications

• Hypersensitivity to glipizide or its components
• Juvenile onset diabetes
• Severe or unstable 'brittle' diabetes
• Diabetes complicated by ketosis and acidosis
• Severe renal, hepatic, or thyroid impairment

Side Effects

• Dose-related gastrointestinal complaints
• Allergic skin reactions
• Haematologic abnormalities
• Metabolic effects
• Endocrine reactions
• Dizziness, drowsiness, headache

Pregnancy & Lactation

• Potential risk to fetus
• Prolonged severe hypoglycaemia in neonates
• Discontinuation one month before expected delivery
• Not recommended during breastfeeding

Precautions & Warnings

• Risk of severe hypoglycaemia
• Elevated blood levels in renal or hepatic insufficiency
• Loss of control on blood glucose under stress
• Diminished responsiveness over time
