Indications

Pharmacology

  • Lowers blood glucose levels

Dosage & Administration

  • Recommended starting dose: 5 mg before breakfast
  • Initial dose for geriatric patients or those with liver disease: 2.5 mg
  • Dosage adjustments based on blood glucose response
  • Maximum recommended once daily dose: 15 mg
  • Total daily dose range: 2.5 to 30 mg
  • Conservative initial and maintenance dosing in elderly, debilitated, or malnourished patients
  • Pediatric use safety and effectiveness not established

Interaction

  • Potentiation of hypoglycaemic action by certain drugs
  • Observation for hypoglycaemia when drugs are administered or withdrawn
  • Drugs that tend to produce hyperglycaemia and affect blood glucose control

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to Glipizide or any component
  • Juvenile onset diabetes
  • Severe or unstable 'brittle' diabetes
  • Diabetes complicated by ketosis and acidosis
  • Severe renal, hepatic, or thyroid impairment

  • Cholestatic jaundice

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Use during pregnancy if potential benefit justifies risk

  • Risk of severe hypoglycaemia in susceptible patients
  • Caution in renal or hepatic insufficiency
