Indications
- Adjunct to diet for controlling hyperglycaemia
- Treatment of non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus
- Reduction in daily insulin dose

Pharmacology
- Lowers blood glucose levels
- Stimulates insulin release from pancreas
- Increases insulin sensitivity
- Decreases hepatic glucose production
Dosage & Administration
- Recommended starting dose: 5 mg before breakfast
- Initial dose for geriatric patients or those with liver disease: 2.5 mg
- Dosage adjustments based on blood glucose response
- Maximum recommended once daily dose: 15 mg
- Total daily dose range: 2.5 to 30 mg
- Conservative initial and maintenance dosing in elderly, debilitated, or malnourished patients
- Pediatric use safety and effectiveness not established
Interaction
- Potentiation of hypoglycaemic action by certain drugs
- Observation for hypoglycaemia when drugs are administered or withdrawn
- Drugs that tend to produce hyperglycaemia and affect blood glucose control
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Glipizide or any component
- Juvenile onset diabetes
- Severe or unstable 'brittle' diabetes
- Diabetes complicated by ketosis and acidosis
- Severe renal, hepatic, or thyroid impairment

- Cholestatic jaundice

Pregnancy & Lactation
- Use during pregnancy if potential benefit justifies risk
- Discontinuation one month before expected delivery date

- Risk of severe hypoglycaemia in susceptible patients
- Caution in renal or hepatic insufficiency
- Maintenance of regular meals and appropriate calorie intake
- Potential loss of blood glucose control during stress
