Indications
- Control of hyperglycaemia

Pharmacology
- Stimulation of insulin release
- Increase in insulin sensitivity
- Decrease in hepatic glucose production
Dosage & Administration
- Dosing adjustment based on blood glucose response
- Maximum reduction in postprandial hyperglycaemia
- Initial dose of 5mg before breakfast
- Geriatric patients started on 2.5mg
- Maximum recommended once daily dose of 15mg
- Maintenance dosing depending on patient response
- Conservative initial and maintenance dosing for special patient groups
- No transition period necessary when transferring patients to Glipizide
- Pediatric use safety and effectiveness not established
Interaction
- Potentiation of hypoglycemic action
- Observation for hypoglycemia when drugs are administered or withdrawn
- Observation for loss of control on blood glucose when drugs are administered or withdrawn
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Glipizide
- Juvenile onset diabetes
- Severe or unstable diabetes
- Diabetes complicated by ketosis and acidosis
- Severe renal, hepatic or thyroid impairment

Pregnancy & Lactation
