- Risk of D-Fo accumulation and lactic acidosis in renal impairment
- Lower vitamin B12 level
- Increased risk of hypoglycemia in combination with insulin
- Regular monitoring of renal function advised
- Discontinue 2-3 days before surgery and reinstate after regaining renal function
- Annual estimation of Vitamin B-12 levels for patients on continuous therapy
- Caution in concomitant therapy with sulfonylurea
Use in Special Populations
- Adjusted dosage for elderly based on renal function
- No effect on growth and puberty detected during controlled studies
- Particular caution recommended for children aged 10-12 years
- Renal function assessment before and during treatment
Overdose Effects
- Hypoglycemia not seen up to 85g doses, lactic acidosis may occur
- Lactic acidosis is a medical emergency, treated with hemodialysis
