Dosage Recommendations for Adults

  • Usual starting dose - 500mg twice a day or 850mg once a day

  • 500mg twice a day with meal, up to a maximum of 2000mg per day

Extended Release Dosage Form

Renal Impaired Patient Usage

Precautions & Warnings

  • Risk of D-Fo accumulation and lactic acidosis in renal impairment
  • Lower vitamin B12 level
  • Increased risk of hypoglycemia in combination with insulin
  • Regular monitoring of renal function advised
  • Discontinue 2-3 days before surgery and reinstate after regaining renal function
  • Annual estimation of Vitamin B-12 levels for patients on continuous therapy
  • Caution in concomitant therapy with sulfonylurea

Use in Special Populations

  • Adjusted dosage for elderly based on renal function
  • No effect on growth and puberty detected during controlled studies
  • Particular caution recommended for children aged 10-12 years
  • Renal function assessment before and during treatment

Overdose Effects

  • Hypoglycemia not seen up to 85g doses, lactic acidosis may occur
  • Lactic acidosis is a medical emergency, treated with hemodialysis
