Indications
- Treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus
- Therapy for overweight patients
- Can be used as monotherapy or in combination with other oral antidiabetic agents or with insulin
Pharmacology
- Biguanide type oral antihyperglycemic drug
- Lowers both basal and postprandial plasma glucose
- Decreases hepatic glucose production
- Improves insulin sensitivity
Dosage & Administration
- Usual starting dose of 500 mg twice a day for adults
- Dosage increases in increments of 500 mg weekly
- Dosage of metformin XR is 500 mg once daily with the evening meal
Interaction

Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to the active substance or excipients
- Acute metabolic acidosis
