Indications

Pharmacology

  • Biguanide type oral antihyperglycemic drug
  • Lowers basal and postprandial plasma glucose

Dosage & Administration

  • Individualized dosage based on effectiveness and tolerance
  • Usual starting dose for adults: 500 mg twice a day with meals

Interaction

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to active substance or excipients

Side Effects

  • Disorders of blood, lymphatic system, metabolism, nutrition, nervous system, gastrointestinal system, hepatobiliary system, and skin
  • Rare occurrences of lactic acidosis, peripheral neuropathy, taste disturbance, and encephalopathy

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Increased risk of congenital abnormalities and perinatal mortality
  • Excretion of Metformin into human breast milk
