Indications
- Treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus
- Management of type 2 diabetes in overweight patients

Pharmacology
- Biguanide type oral antihyperglycemic drug
- Lowers basal and postprandial plasma glucose
- Does not produce hypoglycemia
- Decreases hepatic glucose production

- Individualized dosage based on effectiveness and tolerance
- Starting dose of 500 mg twice a day for adults

Interaction
- Potential interaction with Furosemide and Nifedipine
- Possible competition with cationic drugs in renal tubular secretion

Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to the active substance or excipients
- Acute metabolic acidosis
- Severe renal failure
- Conditions altering renal function or causing tissue hypoxia

Pregnancy & Lactation
- Increased risk of congenital abnormalities and perinatal mortality in uncontrolled diabetes during pregnancy

Precautions & Warnings
- Risk of Metfar accumulation and lactic acidosis with impaired renal function
- Lowering of vitamin B12 level
- Increased risk of hypoglycemia with insulin
Use in Special Populations
- Adjustment of metformin dosage based on renal function in elderly subjects
- Confirmation of type 2 diabetes mellitus diagnosis before treatment with metformin in pediatric population
- Regular assessment of renal function in diabetics receiving metformin therapy
Overdose Effects
- Absence of hypoglycemia at doses up to 85 gm
- Occurrence of lactic acidosis in overdose cases
