Indications
- Treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus in adults
- Treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus in children aged 10 years and adolescents
- Reduction of diabetic complications in overweight patients
Pharmacology
- Biguanide type oral antihyperglycemic drug
- Lowers basal and postprandial plasma glucose
- Decreases hepatic glucose production
- Improves insulin sensitivity
Dosage & Administration
- Individualized dosage based on effectiveness and tolerance
- Usual starting dose for adults: 500 mg twice a day or 850 mg once a day
- Usual starting dose for children: 500 mg twice a day
- Max daily doses: 2000 mg for adults, 2000 mg for children
- Dosage increments for extended release tablet
