Indications

  • Treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus
  • Improving glycaemic control in adults
  • Monotherapy in inadequately controlled patients
  • Combination therapy with metformin

Pharmacology

  • Inhibitor of DPP-4 enzyme
  • Increases concentrations of active incretin hormones
  • Stimulates release of insulin
  • Decreases secretion of glucagon

Dosage & Administration

  • 5 mg once daily
  • Concomitant administration with metformin
  • Consideration of lower dose of sulphonylurea with combination therapy
  • No dose adjustment required for patients with renal impairment
  • Can be taken with or without a meal

Interaction

  • Weak competitive and weak to moderate mechanism-based inhibitor of CYP isozyme CYP3A4
  • No clinically relevant effect on the pharmacokinetics of metformin, glyburide, simvastatin, warfarin, digoxin, or oral contraceptives

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to the active substance or to any of the excipients

  • Pancreatitis in combination with metformin and sulfonylurea
