- Works by Causing Pancreas to Release More Insulin into the Blood Stream
Pharmacology

Dosage & Administration
- Starting Dose 0.5 mg for Patients Not Previously Treated or HbA1c < 8%
- Initial Dose 1 or 2 mg for Patients Previously Treated with Blood Glucose-Lowering Drugs and HbA1c > 8%
- Dosage Adjustment According to Response at Intervals of 1-2 Weeks
- Maximum 16 mg Daily
- Taken Immediately or Up to 30 Minutes Before Each Meal
Interaction
- Possible Interactions with Inhibitors of the Cytochrome P450 Enzyme System (Azole Antifungals and Macrolides)
- Possible Interactions with Inducers of the Cytochrome P450 Enzyme System (Rifampin, Phenobarbital, Carbamazepine, Troglitazone, etc.)
- Cimetidine Has No Significant Effect on Glimet Absorption or Clearance
- No Significant Effect of Glimet on Digoxin, Theophylline, or Warfarin
- Increased Risk of Hypoglycemia When Co-administered with Highly Protein Bound Drugs (e.g., NSAIDs)
- Increased Risk of Hypoglycemia When Co-administered with Certain Drugs such as Salicylates, Sulphonamides, Chloramphenicol, Coumarins, Probenecid, Monoamine Oxidase (MAO) Inhibitors, and Adrenergic Blockers
