Indications

Description
- Oral blood-glucose-lowering drug
- Belongs to the meglitinide class
- Works by causing pancreas to release more insulin into the bloodstream
- Rapid onset of action and elimination
Pharmacology
- Binds to specific receptors in the cell membrane
- Leads to closure of ATP dependent K+ channels
- Depolarization of cell membrane
- Ca++ influx
- Increased intracellular Ca++
- Stimulation of insulin secretion
Dosage & Administration
- Starting dose based on HbA1c levels
- Should be taken before each meal
- Dosage adjustment according to response
- Maximum dosage of 16 mg daily
Interaction
- Possible interactions with other medications

Contraindications
- Diabetic ketoacidosis

- Hypoglycemic reactions with coma, seizure, or neurological impairment
