Indications
- Improves glycaemic control in type II diabetes
- Can be used as monotherapy or in combination with other antidiabetic agents
Pharmacology
- Belongs to thiazolidinediones class of oral antidiabetic agents
- Dependent on the presence of Insulin for its mechanism of action
- Decreases Insulin resistance in the periphery and liver
- Improves abnormality in lipid metabolism by activating PPAR-γ
Dosage & Administration
- Can be taken once daily without regard to meals
- Individualized management of antidiabetic therapy
- Initiation at 15 mg or 30 mg once daily dosages
- Maximum recommended daily dose should not exceed 45 mg
Interaction
- Reduces plasma concentration of oral contraceptives containing ethinyl oestradiol and norethindrone
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to any of its components

- Incidence and types of adverse events reported in clinical trials
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Use during pregnancy only if potential benefit justifies potential risk to the foetus
- Not known whether it is secreted in human milk
Precautions & Warnings
- Exerts antihyperglycaemic effect only in the presence of Insulin
- Not to be used in Type 1 diabetes or for the treatment of diabetic ketoacidosis
- Use with caution in case of combination antidiabetic therapy and hepatic insufficiency
- Regular monitoring of liver enzymes
