Indications

• Short-term treatment of serious infections
• Effective in bacterial septicemia
• Treats respiratory tract infections
• Treatment for bone and joint infections

Pharmacology

• Semi-synthetic aminoglycoside antibiotic
• Active against pseudomonas species
• Active against Escherichia coli
• Active against Proteus species
• Active against Klebsiella-Enterobacter species
• Active against Acinetobacter species
• Active against Citrobacter freundii
• Active against penicillinase and nonpenicillinase-producing Staphylococcus species

Dosage

• Adult dosage: 15 mg/kg/day in two equally-divided doses
• Recommended 100 mg dosage for children
• Loading dose for neonates and premature children
• Increased dosage for life-threatening infections
• Dosage adjustment for elderly and impaired renal function

Administration

• Preferred intramuscular route for most infections
• Intravenous route for life-threatening infections
• Intraperitoneal use as an irrigant

Interaction

• Potentiation of effects when combined with myorelaxants
• Avoid combination with other aminoglycoside antibiotics
• Increased risk of ototoxicity when combined with fast-acting diuretics
• Increased risk of nephrotoxicity when combined with Cephalosporins or Polymixins

Contraindications

• Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to Amikacin or any constituents of the injection
