Indications

  • Adjunct to diet and exercise to improve glycemic control in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus
  • Appropriate for patients with both sitagliptin and metformin treatment
  • Limitations of use in patients with type 1 diabetes
  • Limitations of use for the treatment of diabetic ketoacidosis
  • Not studied in patients with a history of pancreatitis

Side Effects

  • Common adverse reactions reported in patients started on sitagliptin and metformin
  • Adverse reactions reported in patients treated with sitagliptin in combination with sulfonylurea and metformin
  • Adverse reactions reported in patients treated with sitagliptin in combination with insulin and metformin
  • Adverse reactions due to initiation of metformin therapy

  • Lactic Acidosis
  • Monitoring of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) levels
  • Association with decrease in vitamin B12 serum levels
  • Postmarketing reports of acute renal failure
  • Postmarketing reports of acute pancreatitis
  • Hematologic parameter monitoring
  • Discontinuation and temporary use of insulin during periods of stress
  • Evaluation for evidence of ketoacidosis or lactic acidosis
  • Allergic and hypersensitivity reactions
