Indications
- adjunct to diet
- improve glycaemic control
- type 2 diabetes mellitus
- not controlled on Metformin Hydrochloride
- not controlled on Vildagliptin alone
- combination of Vildagliptin and Metformin Hydrochloride
Pharmacology
- inhibits DPP-4
- increases insulin secretion
- decreases glucagon secretion
- lowers basal and postprandial plasma glucose
- improves insulin sensitivity
Dosage & Administration
- initiated at twice daily
- may be switched from separate tablets
- doses higher than 100 mg of vildagliptin not recommended
- take with or just after food
Interaction
- no clinically relevant pharmacokinetic interaction
- low potential for drug interactions
Contraindications
- known hypersensitivity to Vildagliptin or Metformin Hydrochloride
- renal disease or dysfunction
- acute myocardial infarction
- septicaemia
- congestive heart failure
- acute or chronic metabolic acidosis
- undergoing radiologic studies with iodinated contrast materials
Side Effects
- headache
- tremor
- dizziness
- nausea
- hypoglycaemia
Pregnancy & Lactation
- not recommended during pregnancy
- no studies on pregnant women
- should not be administered to breast-feeding women
Precautions & Warnings
- lactic acidosis
- monitor serum creatinine levels
- special caution in elderly patients
- monitor Liver Function Tests
- discontinue 48 hours before elective surgery
Use in Special Populations
- not recommended for pediatric patients
- monitor renal function in geriatric patients
- not recommended in patients with renal failure
- not recommended in patients with hepatic impairment
