Indications
- Replacement therapy in hypothyroidism
- Suppression of TSH levels in goitres
- Diagnostic aid in suppression tests
Pharmacology
- Contains synthetic Levothyroxine (T4)
- Converted to Triiodothyronine (T3) in peripheral tissues
- Long half-life in circulation
Dosage & Administration
- Adult starting dose: 25-50 mcg/day
- Pediatric starting dose: 10-15 mcg/kg/day
- Dose adjustment based on clinical response
Interaction
- Concurrent use with tri/tetracyclic antidepressants may increase effects
- Addition to antidiabetic therapy may increase requirements
Contraindications
- Untreated subclinical or overt Thyrotoxicosis
- Acute Myocardial Infarction
- Uncorrected Adrenal failure
Side Effects
- Hyperthyroidism symptoms: fatigue, weight loss, heat intolerance
- Central nervous system effects: headache, nervousness, insomnia
- Cardiovascular effects: palpitations, tachycardia, increased blood pressure

- Adrenocortical insufficiency should be treated before therapy

- Signs of hyperthyroidism: agitation, confusion, tachycardia
