Carbizol 5 mg (Tablet)

Indications

• Management of hyperthyroidism
• Management of thyrotoxicosis
• Preparation of patients for thyroidectomy
• Use in combination with radioactive ablative therapy

Pharmacology

• Depresses formation of thyroid hormone
• Reduces uptake and concentration of inorganic iodine
• Reduces formation of di-iodotyrosine and thyroxine
• Rapid absorption from gastrointestinal tract
• Widely distributed throughout the body
• Metabolized to methimazole
• Crosses placental barrier
• Attains high concentration in lactating patients' milk

Dosage & Administration

• Initial dose: 20-60 mg in 2-3 divided doses
• Maintenance regimen: gradual reduction to maintain euthyroid state
• Neonates & Children below 12 years: usual initial dose of 250 mcg/Kg/day
• Duration of treatment: 18 to 24 months

Interaction

• Adverse interaction with iodine or iodine excess
• Interaction with oral anticoagulants
• Possible increase in serum concentrations of digoxin and digitoxin

Contraindications

• Hypersensitivity to carbimazole or other thiourea antithyroid agents

Pregnancy & Lactation

• May be given during pregnancy to a thyrotoxic patient
• Crosses placenta
• Excreted into breast milk
• May cause foetal or neonatal hypothyroidism and goitre

Precautions & Warnings

• Given with utmost caution if there is tracheal obstruction
• High dosages may produce thyroid enlargement

Overdose Effects

• May result in hypothyroidism and goitre
• If blood dyscrasias occur, the drug should be immediately withdrawn
