Indications
Short-term treatment of serious infections due to susceptible strains of Gram-negative bacteria, bacterial septicemia, respiratory tract infections, bone and joint infections, central nervous system infections, skin and soft tissue infections, intra-abdominal infections, burns, postoperative infections, complicated urinary tract infections, staphylococci infections
Pharmacology
Semi-synthetic aminoglycoside antibiotic, active against pseudomonas species, Escherichia coli, Proteus species, Providencia species, Klebsiella-Enterobacter species, Acinetobacter species, Citrobacter freundii, penicillinase and nonpenicillinase-producing Staphylococcus species
Dosage
Adult dose: 15 mg/kg/day in two equally-divided doses, Children's dose: 100 mg for accurate measurement, Neonates and premature children: loading dose of 10 mg/kg followed by 15 mg/kg/day, Elderly: dosage adjustment based on renal function, Life-threatening infections: dose may be increased to 500 mg every eight hours, Urinary tract infections: 7.5mg/kg/day, Impaired renal function: dose should be reduced and/or intervals between doses increased
Administration
Intramuscular or intravenous administration preferred for most infections, intraperitoneal use as an irrigant after recovery from anesthesia
Interaction
Concurrent administration with myorelaxants, other Aminoglycoside antibiotics, fast acting diuretics, Cephalosporins, and Polymixins should be avoided due to potential adverse effects
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to Amikacin or any constituents of the injection
Side Effects
Tinnitus, vertigo, partial reversible or irreversible deafness, skin rash, drug fever, headache, paraesthesia, nausea, vomiting
Pregnancy & Lactation
Rapid crossing of placenta, potential risk of ototoxicity in the fetus, no information available regarding safety during breastfeeding
Precautions & Warnings
Patients should be well hydrated to minimize chemical irritation of the renal tubules, monitoring of renal function during treatment is important
Use in Special Populations
Safety and effectiveness in children or adolescents under 16 years not established
Overdose Effects
Peritoneal dialysis or haemodialysis in the event of overdose or toxic reaction
