Dosage & Administration
- Tablet Daily Dosage: 1 mg to 10 mg for adults
- Tablet Dosage for Children: 0.03 mg/kg to 0.20 mg/kg body weight
- Short Dexamethasone Suppression Test: 1 mg dose at 11 p.m.
- Injection Administration: Intravenous (IV), intramuscular (IM) or local injection
- Intravenous Injection: Given slowly over several minutes
- Intramuscular Administration: Deep intramuscular injection
- Intra-articular Injection: Under strictly aseptic conditions
- Injections Potency Maintenance: At least 24 hours when diluted with infusion fluids
Interaction
- Enhanced potassium loss with diuretics and/or cardiac glycosides
- Impaired glucose tolerance with antidiabetics
- Increased incidence and severity of gastrointestinal ulceration with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs
- Alteration of need for oral anticoagulants
- Reduced effectiveness with liver enzyme inducing drugs
- Risk of salicylate intoxication when used concomitantly with long-term therapy
- Impaired gastrointestinal absorption with certain antacids
Contraindications
- Gastric and duodenal ulcers
- Systemic and ophthalmic fungal infections
- Viral infections
- Glaucoma
- Hypersensitivity to corticosteroids
