Indications
- Short-term treatment of serious infections
- Effective in bacterial septicemia
- Treats serious infections of the respiratory tract, bones and joints, central nervous system, skin, and soft tissue
- Effective in intra-abdominal infections and burns
- Effective in infections caused by gentamicin and/or tobramycin-resistant strains
- Effective in staphylococci infections
Pharmacology
- Semi-synthetic aminoglycoside antibiotic
- Active against pseudomonas, Escherichia coli, Proteus, Providencia, Klebsiella, Acinetobacter, and Citrobacter species
- Active against penicillinase and nonpenicillinase-producing Staphylococcus species
Dosage
- Recommended dosage for adults and children
- Recommended dosage for neonates and premature children
- Dosage adjustment for the elderly
- Dosage for life-threatening infections and those caused by Pseudomonas
- Dosage for urinary tract infections
- Dosage adjustment for impaired renal function
Administration
- Intramuscular or intravenous administration for most infections
- Intravenous route for life-threatening infections
- Intraperitoneal use as an irrigant
Interaction
- Potentiation of myorelaxants effects
- Avoidance of concurrent administration with other Aminoglycoside antibiotics
- Increased risk of ototoxicity with fast-acting diuretics
- Increased risk of nephrotoxicity with Cephalosporins or Polymixins
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to Amikacin
Side Effects
- Reported adverse effects: tinnitus, vertigo, reversible or irreversible deafness, skin rash, drug fever, headache, paraesthesia, nausea, vomiting
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Rapid crossing of the placenta into the fetal circulation and amniotic fluid
- Potential risk of ototoxicity in the fetus
- No information about safety during breastfeeding
Precautions & Warnings
- Hydration to minimize chemical irritation of the renal tubules
- Monitoring of renal function during treatment with aminoglycosides

- Unestablished safety and effectiveness in children or adolescents under 16 years

- Peritoneal dialysis or haemodialysis aid in the removal of Cinamak from the blood
