Pharmacology

Decreases inflammation by inhibiting leukocyte migration and increasing capillary permeability

Dosage & Administration

Daily oral dosages vary from 1mg to 10mg for adults
Daily oral dosages vary from 0.03-0.20mg/kg body weight for children
Intravenous, intramuscular, or local injection administration
Dosage depends on severity of condition and patient response
Systemic therapy usually requires daily doses of 0.05-0.20mg/kg body weight

Interaction

Enhanced potassium loss with diuretics and cardiac glycosides
Impaired glucose tolerance with antidiabetics
Increased risk of gastrointestinal ulceration with NSAIDs
Alteration of oral anticoagulant need
Reduced effectiveness when used with liver enzyme inducing drugs
Potential reduction in glucocorticoid dosage with caution when given with salicylates
Impaired gastrointestinal absorption with antacids, especially those containing magnesium trisilicate

Contraindications

Gastric and duodenal ulcers
Systemic and ophthalmic fungal infections
Viral infections
Glaucoma
Hypersensitivity to corticosteroids

Use with caution in peptic ulcers, diverticulitis, and ulcerative colitis
