Pharmacology

Decreases inflammation by inhibiting leukocyte migration and increasing capillary permeability

Dosage & Administration

  • Daily oral dosages vary from 1mg to 10mg for adults
  • Daily oral dosages vary from 0.03-0.20mg/kg body weight for children
  • Intravenous, intramuscular, or local injection administration
  • Dosage depends on severity of condition and patient response
  • Systemic therapy usually requires daily doses of 0.05-0.20mg/kg body weight

Interaction

  • Enhanced potassium loss with diuretics and cardiac glycosides
  • Impaired glucose tolerance with antidiabetics
  • Increased risk of gastrointestinal ulceration with NSAIDs
  • Alteration of oral anticoagulant need
  • Reduced effectiveness when used with liver enzyme inducing drugs
  • Potential reduction in glucocorticoid dosage with caution when given with salicylates
  • Impaired gastrointestinal absorption with antacids, especially those containing magnesium trisilicate

Contraindications

  • Gastric and duodenal ulcers
  • Systemic and ophthalmic fungal infections
  • Viral infections
  • Glaucoma
  • Hypersensitivity to corticosteroids

  • Minimize drug-induced secondary adrenocortical insufficiency by gradual reduction of dosage
  • Use with caution in peptic ulcers, diverticulitis, and ulcerative colitis
  • Consideration for patients at increased risk of osteoporosis before initiating therapy
  • Titrate pediatric patients to the lowest effective dose to minimize potential growth effects
