Pharmacology
Decreases inflammation by inhibiting leukocyte migration and increasing capillary permeability
Dosage & Administration
- Daily oral dosages vary from 1mg to 10mg for adults
- Daily oral dosages vary from 0.03-0.20mg/kg body weight for children
- Intravenous, intramuscular, or local injection administration
- Dosage depends on severity of condition and patient response
- Systemic therapy usually requires daily doses of 0.05-0.20mg/kg body weight
Interaction
- Enhanced potassium loss with diuretics and cardiac glycosides
- Impaired glucose tolerance with antidiabetics
- Increased risk of gastrointestinal ulceration with NSAIDs
- Alteration of oral anticoagulant need
- Reduced effectiveness when used with liver enzyme inducing drugs
- Potential reduction in glucocorticoid dosage with caution when given with salicylates
- Impaired gastrointestinal absorption with antacids, especially those containing magnesium trisilicate
Contraindications
- Gastric and duodenal ulcers
- Systemic and ophthalmic fungal infections
- Viral infections
- Glaucoma
- Hypersensitivity to corticosteroids

- Minimize drug-induced secondary adrenocortical insufficiency by gradual reduction of dosage
- Use with caution in peptic ulcers, diverticulitis, and ulcerative colitis
- Consideration for patients at increased risk of osteoporosis before initiating therapy
- Titrate pediatric patients to the lowest effective dose to minimize potential growth effects
