Pharmacology

Synthetic glucocorticoid that decreases inflammation by inhibiting leukocyte migration and increasing capillary permeability

Dosage & Administration

  • Daily oral dosages vary from 1 mg to 10 mg for adults and 0.03-0.20 mg/kg for children
  • Intravenous, intramuscular or local injection administration
  • For systemic therapy, daily doses of 0.05-0.20 mg/kg body weight are usually sufficient

  • Diuretics and/or cardiac glycosides
  • Antidiabetics
  • Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs
  • Oral anti-coagulants
  • Liver enzyme inducing drugs
  • Salicylates
  • Antacids

Contraindications

  • Gastric and duodenal ulcers
  • Systemic and ophthalmic fungal infections
  • Viral infections
  • Glaucoma
  • Hypersensitivity to corticosteroids

Pregnancy & Lactation

Pregnancy Category C. Glucocorticoids appear in breast milk. Mothers taking high dosages should be advised not to breast-feed

Precautions & Warnings

Use the lowest possible dose to control the condition being treated. Caution in patients with congestive heart failure, hypertension, or renal insufficiency. Special consideration for patients at risk of osteoporosis before initiating corticosteroid therapy.

Use in Special Populations

Use with caution in pediatric patients to minimize potential growth effects

Overdose Effects

Treatment of overdosage is by supportive and symptomatic therapy

  • Injections: Store below 30°C, protected from light. Do not freeze
