Indications

Severe allergic conditions in asthma
Atopic dermatitis
Contact dermatitis
Drug hypersensitivity reactions
Perennial or seasonal allergic rhinitis
Serum sickness
Collagen diseases like lupus erythematosus or rheumatoid arthritis
Dermatologic diseases such as pemphigus or stevens-johnson syndrome
Endocrine disorders: adrenocortical insufficiency, congenital adrenal hyperplasia, hypercalcemia associated with cancer
Gastrointestinal diseases: Regional enteritis and ulcerative colitis
Hematologic disorders: Acquired hemolytic anemia, idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura, and secondary thrombocytopenia
Neoplastic diseases: Leukemias and lymphomas
Nervous system: Acute exacerbations of multiple sclerosis, cerebral edema
Ophthalmic diseases: Temporal arteritis, uveitis
Renal diseases: Idiopathic nephrotic syndrome
Respiratory diseases: Pulmonary tuberculosis, symptomatic sarcoidosis
Rheumatic disorders: Gouty arthritis, rheumatic carditis, ankylosing spondylitis, psoriatic arthritis

Pharmacology

Synthetic glucocorticoid that decreases inflammation by inhibiting leukocyte migration and increasing capillary permeability

Dosage & Administration

Daily oral dosages vary from 1 mg to 10 mg for adults and 0.03-0.20 mg/kg for children
Intravenous, intramuscular or local injection administration
For systemic therapy, daily doses of 0.05-0.20 mg/kg body weight are usually sufficient

Precautions & Warnings

Use the lowest possible dose to control the condition being treated. Caution in patients with congestive heart failure, hypertension, or renal insufficiency. Special consideration for patients at risk of osteoporosis before initiating corticosteroid therapy.

Use in Special Populations

Use with caution in pediatric patients to minimize potential growth effects

Treatment of overdosage is by supportive and symptomatic therapy
