Indications
- Short-term treatment of serious Gram-negative bacterial infections
- Effective in bacterial septicemia, respiratory tract infections, CNS infections, skin and soft tissue infections
- Effective in intra-abdominal infections, burns, postoperative infections
- Effective in complicated and recurrent urinary tract infections
- Effective in staphylococci infections
- May be considered as initial therapy in staphylococcal diseases
Pharmacology
- Semi-synthetic aminoglycoside antibiotic
- Active against pseudomonas, Escherichia coli, Proteus, Klebsiella, Acinetobacter, Citrobacter
- Active against penicillinase and non-penicillinase-producing Staphylococcus species
- Susceptible to strains resistant to other aminoglycosides
Dosage
- 15 mg/kg/day in two equally-divided doses for adults and children
- Neonates and premature children: initial loading dose of 10 mg/kg followed by 15 mg/kg/day
- Elderly: dosage adjusted based on renal function assessment
- Maximum adult dose: 1.5g/day, not to exceed 15g total
- Impaired renal function: dose reduction and/or increased intervals between doses
Administration
- Preferred intramuscular route for most infections
- Intravenous route used for life-threatening infections or when intramuscular injection is not feasible
- Intraperitoneal use as an irrigant in concentration of 0.25%
Interaction
- Potentiation of myorelaxants' effects
- Avoid concurrent administration with other aminoglycoside antibiotics
- Increased risk of ototoxicity with fast-acting diuretics in renal failure patients
- Increased risk of nephrotoxicity with Cephalosporins or Polymixins

- Hypersensitivity to Amikacin or any constituents of the injection
