Description
- Indications:
- Primary or secondary adrenocortical insufficiency
- Acute adrenocortical insufficiency
- Shock unresponsive to conventional therapy
- Congenital adrenal hyperplasia
- Hypercalcemia associated with cancer
- Nonsuppurative thyroiditis
- Rheumatic Disorders
- Dermatologic Diseases
- Control of severe or incapacitating allergic conditions
- Ophthalmic Diseases
- Gastrointestinal Diseases
- Pulmonary tuberculosis
- Loeffler's syndrome
- Hematologic Disorders
- Neoplastic Diseases

- Pharmacology: Hydrocortisone inhibits prostaglandin synthesis by inhibiting the enzyme phospholipase A2. It also controls the rate of protein synthesis.
- Dosage & Administration:
- Tablet: The initial dosage may vary from 20 mg to 240 mg per day depending on the specific disease entity being treated. Dosage requirements are variable and must be individualized.
- Injection:
- Adult dosage by IM or slow IV injection is 100 mg to 500 mg, depending on the severity.
- Children dosage by slow IV injection: up to 1 year 25 mg, 1-5 years 50 mg, 6-12 years 100 mg.
- Interaction: Drugs that induce hepatic enzymes such as Phenobarbital, Phenytoin, and Rifampin may increase the clearance of corticosteroids. Drugs such as Troleandomycin and Ketoconazole may inhibit the metabolism of corticosteroids and decrease their clearance.
- Contraindications: Contraindicated in severe systemic fungal infections and patients with known hypersensitivity to any component of this product.
- Side Effects: Generally well tolerated except in prolonged high doses. Side effects may include cardiac arrhythmia, esophageal candidiasis, menstrual irregularity, decreased carbohydrate & glucose tolerance, fluid retention, increased appetite, weight gain, mood changes, insomnia, acne, etc.
- Pregnancy & Lactation: Should be prescribed in pregnancy and lactation only if absolutely required.
- Precautions & Warnings: Use with caution in patients with a history of peptic ulceration, congestive heart failure, hypertension, glaucoma, diabetes mellitus, and epilepsy.
