Pharmacology
Synthetic adrenocortical drug with predominantly glucocorticoid properties
Absorption
Rapid and well-absorbed from the GI tract following oral administration
Protein Binding
70-90% protein-bound in the plasma
Elimination
Half-life of 2 to 4 hours, metabolized mainly in the liver and excreted in the urine

Interactions
Reduced efficacy with Aminoglutethimide, Antacids, Barbiturates, Carbamazepine, Griseofulvin, Mitotane, Phenylbutazone, Phenytoin, Primidone, Rifampin; Potassium reduction by Cortisol; cautious use with Digitalis and Immunization
Contraindications
Systemic infections without specific anti-infective therapy, Hypersensitivity to any ingredient, Ocular herpes simplex

Diabetes, Hypertension, Psychological disturbances, Osteoporosis, Pregnancy, Chronic nephritis; Long-term use can cause Cushing's habitus, hyperglycemia, muscular weakness, increased susceptibility to infection, delayed wound healing, psychiatric disturbances
Overdose Effects
Adverse effects develop after prolonged use of excess doses, treatment is symptomatic, reduce dose gradually
