Pharmacology
Synthetic adrenocortical drug with predominantly glucocorticoid properties. Inhibits the action of the Phospholipase A2 enzyme. Rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. Metabolized in the liver and excreted in the urine.

Interaction
Efficacy reduced by Aminoglutethimide, Antacids, Barbiturates, Carbamazepine, Griseofulvin, Mitotane, Phenylbutazone, Phenytoin, Primidone, and Rifampin. Reduces potassium levels. Digitalis can cause Cardiac arrhythmias if hypokalemia occurs. Immunization should be done carefully.
Contraindications
Systemic infections unless specific anti-infective therapy is employed. Hypersensitivity. Ocular herpes simplex.

- Flushing of face or cheeks

Pregnancy & Lactation
Not recommended during pregnancy unless essential. Should only be used if the expected benefit to the mother is greater than any possible risk to the fetus. Corticosteroids appear in breast milk and could suppress growth or cause unwanted effects.
Precautions & Warnings
Precaution in diabetes, hypertension, Psychological disturbances, osteoporosis, post-menopausal women, pregnancy, and chronic nephritis. Long-term use can cause Cushing's habitus, hyperglycemia, muscular weakness, increased susceptibility to infection, delayed wound healing, and psychiatric disturbances.
Overdose Effects
Adverse effects develop after prolonged use of doses in excess of the normal physiological requirement. Treatment is symptomatic and the dose should be reduced gradually.
