Indications
- Treatment of secondary amenorrhea
- Treatment of abnormal uterine bleeding
- Reduction of endometrial hyperplasia
Pharmacology
- Transforms proliferative into secretory endometrium
- Devoid of significant estrogenic activity
- Inhibits gonadotropin production
Dosage & Administration
- Dosages of 5 or 10 mg daily for 5 to 10 days
- Onset of progestin withdrawal bleeding within three to seven days
- Dosages of 5 or 10 mg daily for 12 to 14 consecutive days per month
Contraindications
- Undiagnosed abnormal genital bleeding
- Known, suspected, or history of breast cancer
- Active DVT, PE, or history of these conditions
Side Effects
- Abnormal uterine bleeding
- Breast tenderness
- Thromboembolic disorders
- Nausea
- Skin sensitivity reactions
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Should not be used during pregnancy
- Increased risks for hypospadias
- Detectable amounts of progestin in breast milk
Precautions & Warnings
- Addition of a progestin when a woman has not had a hysterectomy
- Unexpected abnormal vaginal bleeding
- Elevated blood pressure
- Hepatic impairment and/or past history of cholestatic jaundice
Use in Special Populations
- Not indicated in children
- Not enough data for geriatric use

- Nausea and vomiting
- Breast tenderness
- Dizziness
- Abdominal pain
- Withdrawal bleeding
