Description
- Norestin is indicated in metropathia hemorrhagic, premenstrual syndrome, postponement of menstruation, endometriosis, and menorrhagia
- Norethisterone tablet has progestational actions similar to progesterone, more potent inhibitor of ovulation, weak estrogenic and androgenic properties
- Oral administration, not intended for use in children
- Dosage and administration instructions for metropathia haemorrhagica, prophylaxis against recurrence of dysfunctional bleeding, premenstrual syndrome, postponement of menstruation, endometriosis, and menorrhagia
- No known interaction
- Contraindications include pregnancy, severe disturbances of liver function, Dubin-Johnson syndrome, Rotor syndrome, previous or existing liver tumors, history of idiopathic jaundice, current thromboembolic processes, hypersensitivity to the active substances or excipients
- Side effects include visual disturbance, nausea, headache, edema, migraine, dyspnoea, hypersensitivity
- Norethisterone is contraindicated during pregnancy and lactation
- Precautions include increased thromboembolic risk, potential for liver tumors, influence on carbohydrate metabolism, reasons for stopping Norestin immediately
- No reports of overdosage, treatment generally unnecessary, no special antidotes

DosageAndAdministration
- MetropathiaHaemorrhagica: 1 tablet 3 times daily for 10 days, withdrawal bleeding occurs 2-4 days after discontinuing treatment
- ProphylaxisAgainstReoccurrence: 1 tablet twice daily from the 19th to the 26th day of the cycle
- PremenstrualSyndrome: 2-3 tablets daily from the 19th to the 26th day of the cycle, repeated for several cycles
- PostponementOfMenstruation: 1 tablet three times daily, starting 3 days before the expected onset of menstruation
- Endometriosis: 2 tablets daily for the first few weeks, increased to 4 or 5 tablets if necessary, duration of 4-6 months continuously or longer
- Menorrhagia: 1 tablet 2-3 times a day from the 19th to the 26th day of the cycle

- ThromboembolicRisk: Increased risk in cases of history of thromboembolic disease, severe diabetes with vascular changes, or sickle-cell anemia
- LiverTumors: Potential for benign and malignant liver tumors leading to life-threatening intra-abdominal haemorrhage, severe upper abdominal complaints, liver enlargement or signs of intra-abdominal haemorrhage should prompt differential diagnosis and possible withdrawal of the preparation
- CarbohydrateMetabolism: Can influence carbohydrate metabolism, parameters should be examined carefully in all diabetics before and regularly during treatment
- ReasonsForStopping:
- Migrainous headaches or more frequent occurrence of unusually severe headaches
- Sudden perceptual disorders (e.g. disturbances of vision or hearing)
- First signs of thrombophlebitis or thromboembolic symptoms, feeling of pain and tightness in the chest
- Pending operations (six weeks beforehand), immobilization (e.g. after accidents)
- Onset of jaundice, hepatitis, general pruritus
- Significant rise in blood pressure
- Pregnancy
