Indications
- Treatment of bronchospasm associated with asthma, emphysema, chronic bronchitis
- Treatment of cardiac asthma and left ventricular or congestive cardiac failure
Pharmacology
- Contains theophylline and ethylenediamine
- Relaxes bronchial smooth muscle
- Increases solubility of theophylline in water
- Mechanisms include increase in intracellular cAMP, adenosine receptor antagonism, prostaglandin antagonism, effects on intracellular calcium
Dosage
- Oral and intravenous administration
- Different initial and maintenance doses for adults and children
- Dose reduction for elderly and patients with hepatic impairment
- Loading dose and maintenance dose for acute severe bronchospasm
- Dosage adjustments for different age groups
Administration
- Tablets should be swallowed whole and not chewed
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to xanthines or ethylenediamine
- Active peptic ulcer
