Indications

  • Ovulation induction in female infertility
  • Preparation of follicles for puncture in controlled ovarian hyperstimulation programs
  • Luteal phase support
  • Threatened and habitual abortion
  • Hypogonadotropic hypogonadism in males
  • Delayed puberty associated with insufficient gonadotropic pituitary function in males

Pharmacology

  • Highly Purified Human Chorionic Gonadotrophin has LH activity
  • Stimulates Leydig cells to promote testosterone production
  • Plasma levels reached approximately six hours after injection
  • Approximately 80 percent metabolized, predominantly in the kidneys
  • Elimination half-life of about 2 days

Dosage & Administration

  • Intramuscular administration after reconstitution
  • 5000-10000IU for ovulation induction and follicle preparation in females
  • 2500-5000IU for luteal phase support in females
  • 5000IU for threatened and habitual abortion in females
  • 2500-5000 IU for hypogonadotropic hypogonadism in males

  • No clinically relevant interactions known

Contraindications

  • Known or suspected androgen-dependent tumours such as prostatic carcinoma or breast carcinoma in males

Side Effects

  • Occasional allergic reactions
  • Local reactions such as pain and rash at injection site
  • Generalized reactions such as rash and fever
  • Unwanted ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome in females
  • Water and sodium retention in males due to high dosages
  • Cautious use in patients with cardiac failure, renal dysfunction, hypertension, epilepsy, or migraine

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Pregnancy Category X
  • Contraindicated in pregnant women
  • Must not be used during lactation

Precautions & Warnings

  • Increased risk of multiplets birth
  • Unwanted ovarian hyperstimulation risk in females
  • Regular monitoring of follicular development and estrogen levels during FSH-treatment
  • Discontinue FSH-containing preparation if unwanted ovarian hyperstimulation occurs
  • Potential induction of precocious puberty in pediatric patients treated for cryptorchidism

Use in Special Populations

  • Potential induction of precocious puberty in pediatric patients treated for cryptorchidism
  • No clinical studies in subjects aged 65 and over

Overdose Effects

  • Very low acute toxicity
  • No known symptoms of acute parenteral overdose
