Indications
- Treatment of bronchospasm associated with asthma, emphysema, and chronic bronchitis
- Treatment of cardiac asthma and left ventricular or congestive cardiac failure in adults
Pharmacology
- Combination of theophylline and ethylenediamine
- Relaxes bronchial smooth muscle
- Increases solubility of theophylline in water
- Mechanisms include increase in intracellular cAMP, adenosine receptor antagonism, prostaglandin antagonism, and effects on intracellular calcium
Dosage
- Oral and intravenous administration
- Dosage varies for adults and children
- Loading dose and maintenance infusion dose specified
- Dose reduction for elderly and hepatic impairment
Administration
- Tablets should be swallowed whole and not chewed

- Hypersensitivity to xanthines or ethylenediamine
- Active peptic ulcer

Precautions & Warnings
- Given with caution in patients with peptic ulceration, hyperthyroidism, hypertension, cardiac arrhythmias, cardiovascular disease, or epilepsy
- Given with caution in patients with heart failure, hepatic dysfunction, chronic alcoholism, acute febrile illness, neonates, and the elderly
