Indications
- Treatment of bronchospasm associated with asthma, emphysema, and chronic bronchitis
- Treatment of cardiac asthma and left ventricular or congestive cardiac failure
Mode of Action
- Combination of theophylline and ethylenediamine
- Relaxes bronchial smooth muscle
- Increases solubility of theophylline in water
Dosage
- Oral:
- Adult: Initial dose: 225-450 mg twice a day
- Child: For children >3 years: 12 mg/kg daily, increased to 24 mg/kg daily in 2 divided doses after 1 week
- Intravenous:
- Adult: Loading dose: 5 mg/kg, Maintenance infusion dose: 0.5 mg/kg/hr, Max rate: 25 mg/min
- Child: Loading dose: same as adult dose, Maintenance dose: 1 mg/kg/hr for 6 months to 9 years, 0.8 mg/kg/hr for 10-16 years
Administration
Tablets should be swallowed whole and not chewed
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to xanthines or ethylenediamine
- Active peptic ulcer

Pregnancy & Lactation
Use should be balanced against the risk of uncontrolled disease
Precautions & Warnings
- Use with caution in patients with peptic ulceration, hyperthyroidism, hypertension, cardiac arrhythmias, or other cardiovascular disease
- Caution in patients with heart failure, hepatic dysfunction, chronic alcoholism, acute febrile illness, neonates, and the elderly
