Description
- Tadalafil is a selective phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitor.
- Indicated for Erectile Dysfunction (ED), Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH), and both conditions simultaneously
Indications
- Erectile Dysfunction (ED)
- Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH)
- Both Erectile Dysfunction and signs and symptoms of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia
Pharmacology
- Selective PDE5 inhibitor
- Increases cGMP in smooth muscle cells
- Causes smooth muscle relaxation
- Increases blood flow into the corpus cavernosum
- Improves blood flow to the urinary tract
- Widens the opening of the bladder neck
Dosage & Administration
- Erectile Dysfunction:
- Starting dose: 10mg
- Maximum dosing frequency: once daily
- Effective for up to 36 hours
- Benign prostatic hyperplasia:
- Recommended dose: 5mg taken daily
- Combined Erectile Dysfunction and Benign prostatic hyperplasia:
- Recommended dose: 5mg taken daily

Side Effects
- Common: Headache, Dyspepsia, Back pain, Myalgia, Nasal pharyngitis, Nasal congestion
- Rare: Change in Color Vision, Sudden vision loss, Hearing loss, Stevens-Johnson Syndrome, Exfoliative dermatitis, Angina, Stroke, Myocardial infarction, Severe hypotension, Tachycardia
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Tadalafil assigned to pregnancy category B by the USFDA
- Recommended for use during pregnancy only when benefit outweighs risk
- Caution when administering to nursing women
