Description
- Used for arrhythmias of the heart
- Corrects abnormal rhythms of the heart
Dosage
- Tablet: 200 mg 3 times daily for 1 week reduced to 200 mg twice daily
- Injection: Initial Load of 150 mg per 100 mL infused over 10 minutes
Mode of Action
- Delays heart's electrical system recharging
- Prolongs electrical phase during which heart's muscle cells are stimulated
- Slows electrical conduction
- Reduction in rapidity of firing of heart's pacemaker
- Causes blood vessels to dilate
Interaction
- May interact with b blockers and calcium channel blockers
- Increases blood levels of Digoxin
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in patients with cardiogenic shock
- Patients with severe sinus-node dysfunction
Side Effects
- Severe lung-related reactions
- Rare fatal liver toxicity
- Reversible corneal microdeposits
- Peripheral neuropathy and myopathy

- Should not be administered during pregnancy
