Indications

  • Treatment of mild to moderately severe bacterial infections
  • Infections of ear, nose, and throat regions
  • Infections of lower respiratory tract
  • Infections due to beta-hemolytic streptococci
  • Skin infections
  • Lymphadenitis and lymphangitis
  • Prophylaxis of scarlet fever
  • Prevention of recurrences of rheumatic fever
  • Prophylaxis of infection after dental procedures
  • Combination therapy with other antibiotics

Pharmacology

  • Acid-stable and absorbed from upper small intestine
  • Potassium salt best absorbed
  • Convenient for treating Gram-positive infections
  • Advantage over penicillin G in resistance to gastric acid inactivation

Dosage

  • Determined according to sensitivity of causative micro-organism
  • Adjustable based on severity of infection and clinical response
  • Adult dosage: 250-500 mg every 6 hours
  • Children's dosage: varies by age and weight
  • Best taken with an empty stomach

Administration
