Indications
- Treatment of mild to moderately severe bacterial infections
- Infections of ear, nose, and throat regions
- Infections of lower respiratory tract
- Skin infections
- Prophylaxis of scarlet fever
- Prevention of recurrences of rheumatic fever
- Prophylaxis of infection after dental and oral surgical procedures
Pharmacology
- Phenoxymethyl penicillin is acid-stable
- Best absorbed from upper part of small intestine
- Convenient for treating Gram-positive infections
- Resistant to inactivation by gastric acid
Dosage
- Dosage determined by sensitivity of causative micro-organism
- Dosage adjustment based on clinical response
- Adult dosage: 250-500 mg 6 hourly
- Children dosage: 125-250 mg 6 hourly
- Infants dosage: 62.5-125 mg 6 hourly
Administration
- Best taken on empty stomach
- Tablets swallowed without chewing
- Syrup bottle must be shaken vigorously before use
