Indications
- Treatment of mild to moderately severe bacterial infections
- Infections of the ear, nose, and throat regions
- Infections of the lower respiratory tract
- Infections due to beta-hemolytic streptococci
- Skin infections
- Lymphadenitis and lymphangitis
- Prophylaxis of scarlet fever
- Prevention of recurrences of rheumatic fever
- Prophylaxis of infection after dental and oral surgical procedures
- Combination therapy with other appropriate antibiotics
Pharmacology
- Acid-stable and absorbed from the upper part of the small intestine
- Best absorbed as potassium salt
- Convenient for treating Gram-positive infections
- Advantage over penicillin G in resistance to gastric acid inactivation
Dosage
- Dosage determination based on sensitivity of causative micro-organism and severity of infection
- Adult dosage: 250-500 mg 6 hourly
- Children dosage: 125-250 mg 6 hourly
- Infants dosage: 62.5-125 mg 6 hourly
- Best taken with an empty stomach
Administration
- Best taken on an empty stomach
- Tablets swallowed without chewing with sufficient liquid
- Syrup to be shaken vigorously before use
Interaction
- Concurrent intake of food reduces rate of absorption
- Potential drug interactions with methotrexate, bacteriostatic chemotherapeutics, probenecid, indomethacin, oral contraceptives, aminoglycosides, oral anticoagulants
- Interference with laboratory and diagnostic tests
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to penicillins or any excipients
- Severe gastrointestinal disorders accompanied by vomiting and diarrhea

- Hypersensitivity reactions involving the skin
- Allergic reactions such as drug fever, vasculitis, interstitial nephritis
- Anaphylactic or anaphylactoid reactions
- Skin rashes or inflammation of mucous membranes
