Description

  • Indications:
    • Treatment of mild to moderately severe bacterial infections
    • Prophylaxis of scarlet fever
    • Prophylaxis of infection after dental and oral surgical procedures
    • Prevention of recurrences of rheumatic fever
  • Pharmacology:
    • Acid-stable and absorbed from the upper part of the small intestine
    • Best absorbed in the form of potassium salt
    • Convenient for treating Gram-positive infections
    • Resistant to inactivation by gastric acid
  • Dosage:
    • For adults: 250-500 mg 6 hourly
    • For children: 125-250 mg 6 hourly
    • For infants: 62.5-125 mg 6 hourly
    • Best taken on an empty stomach
  • Administration:
    • Best taken on an empty stomach
    • Tablets swallowed without chewing with liquid
    • Syrup to be shaken vigorously before use
  • Interaction:
    • Food intake affects absorption
    • Drug interactions with methotrexate, probenecid, anticoagulants, etc.
