Indications
- Treatment of bacterial infections in ear, nose, and throat regions
- Treatment of infections in lower respiratory tract
- Prophylaxis of scarlet fever
- Prophylaxis of infection after dental and oral surgical procedures
- Combination therapy with other antibiotics if indicated
Pharmacology
- Phenoxymethyl penicillin is acid-stable
- Best absorbed in potassium salt form
- Convenient for treating Gram-positive infections
- Resistant to inactivation by gastric acid
Dosage
- Dosage based on sensitivity of micro-organism and severity of infection
- Adult dosage: 250-500 mg 6 hourly
- Children dosage: 125-250 mg 6 hourly
- Infants dosage: 62.5-125 mg 6 hourly
Administration
- Best taken on an empty stomach
- Tablets to be swallowed without chewing
- Syrup to be shaken vigorously before use
Interaction
- Reduced absorption with concurrent food intake
- Interactions with methotrexate, probenecid, oral anticoagulants, and others
- Potential interference with laboratory and diagnostic tests
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to penicillins or excipients
- Severe gastrointestinal disorders accompanied by vomiting and diarrhea

- Consideration of cross-allergy with cephalosporins
- Consideration of potassium content in patients with heart diseases or electrolyte disturbances
- Regular checking of patient's condition
- Sugar content consideration in patients with diabetes mellitus
- No impairment of ability to drive or operate machinery
Overdose Effects
- Low toxicity and broad therapeutic range
- Risk of encephalopathy in case of overdose or renal impairment
- No special measures required in the event of overdosage
- Elimination through haemodialysis if needed
