Indications

  • Treatment of bacterial infections in ear, nose, and throat regions
  • Treatment of infections in lower respiratory tract
  • Prophylaxis of scarlet fever
  • Prophylaxis of infection after dental and oral surgical procedures
  • Combination therapy with other antibiotics if indicated

Pharmacology

  • Phenoxymethyl penicillin is acid-stable
  • Best absorbed in potassium salt form
  • Convenient for treating Gram-positive infections
  • Resistant to inactivation by gastric acid

Dosage

  • Dosage based on sensitivity of micro-organism and severity of infection
  • Adult dosage: 250-500 mg 6 hourly
  • Children dosage: 125-250 mg 6 hourly
  • Infants dosage: 62.5-125 mg 6 hourly

Administration

  • Best taken on an empty stomach
  • Tablets to be swallowed without chewing
  • Syrup to be shaken vigorously before use

Interaction

  • Reduced absorption with concurrent food intake
  • Interactions with methotrexate, probenecid, oral anticoagulants, and others
  • Potential interference with laboratory and diagnostic tests

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to penicillins or excipients
  • Severe gastrointestinal disorders accompanied by vomiting and diarrhea
